Hail damage typically produces multiple dents distributed across panels — the roof, bonnet, boot lid and guards are most commonly affected. Unlike a single parking incident, a hail event can produce dents across several panels simultaneously.
One approach commonly used for hail damage is Paintless Dent Repair (PDR). PDR uses specialist tools to work dents back from behind the panel without affecting the original paint surface. Where PDR is suitable — where the paint has remained intact and dents are of a type PDR can address — it can be an effective option. Suitability is assessed by the repairer based on the specific dent characteristics and paint condition.
Where paint has cracked or chipped, or where dents are too deep or complex for PDR, conventional repair involving sanding, filling and respraying is used instead. A repairer will confirm which approach is appropriate after assessing your photos and inspecting the vehicle.
How hail damage is assessed
Because hail can affect many panels simultaneously, repairers typically assess hail damage on a panel-by-panel basis. The total cost reflects the number of panels affected, the density of dents on each panel, and the repair method required. Getting indicative estimates gives you a realistic expectation of likely repair costs before deciding how to proceed.
Factors that affect hail damage repair cost
Number of panels affected
More affected panels mean more time and materials. Roofs and bonnets with heavy denting are typically the most labour-intensive to repair.
Dent size and depth
Shallower, rounder dents may be suitable for PDR where the paint is intact. Larger or deeper impacts may require conventional repair with respraying.
Paint condition
If hail has caused the paint to crack or chip at impact points, the affected panels require conventional repair rather than PDR.
Vehicle type and panel configuration
Larger vehicles have more surface area, and some panel layouts are harder to access from behind, which can affect PDR feasibility and overall repair scope.
How to photograph hail damage
Because hail can affect many areas at once, take a systematic approach to your photos. One wide shot of each affected panel (roof, bonnet, boot lid, guards separately) plus close-ups of the most heavily dented areas gives repairers the clearest picture.
Indirect natural light — overcast conditions or shade — shows dent definition more clearly than direct midday sun. In your description, note which panels are affected and whether you can see any paint cracking at the impact points.
